Bet Sir Cliff Didn’t Have That
From : Orlando Weeks (The Maccabees)
I remember you taking us on a European Tour. It was the first night and I think we were in Belgium? Papillon had just come out and things were going so good with that record that the venue had been upgraded. On that tour it felt like all the shows were getting moved into bigger and more beautiful rooms. Anyway this place was a big old barn. It being day one of the tour, us boys were trying to not get under anyone’s feet. But we still wanted to watch the gig side of stage so we tried our luck. I realised I was stood next to your slightly intimidating Tour Manager Maccum. At one point between songs dipped his head toward mine, looking at the massive venue and whispered, “Cliff Richard was in here last night!” I pulled the appropriate face and carried on enjoying the gig. Towards the end of the final song, which I think was Papillon, there was an eruption of pyrotechnics. Massive great fire balls, bang on cue, that lit up the room. At which point Maccum turned on his heal, proud as punch, and without even looking at me said, “bet Sir Cliff didn’t have that!” and swaggered in to the backstage. Thank you all for taking us Maccabees away with you and giving us the chance to play in some really beautiful rooms around Europe. Honourable mention for Nick Mayhew's all night disco in an outhouse behind a venue in Krakow.
