If Editors seem like they don't really have any grand plans, that they pursue their muse without a firm destination in mind, occasionally there's evidence that they harbor irresistible wishes which persist until their realisation. In November of 2009 EgoFM interviewed Tom and Russell, and Tom expressed a desire to work with a female vocalist, perhaps on a duet. 6 years later he did just that. Rachel Goswell joined Editors to record 3 songs on In Dream, Ocean of Night was one of them. It's not the first time that La Goswell had sung backing vocals outside of Slowdive and Mojave 3, having joined Chapterhouse on their 1991 single Pearl. This was, however, the first time that Editors had featured an outside singer. Given his turntable tendencies, I'd guess the opening piano on Ocean of Night came from Elliott, because it's very much like an Italian house riff from way back. Plus, I love how it all descends into percussion at the end, very reminiscent of There Goes the Fear by Doves.
The Black Gold Archives

Welcome to the Black Gold Archives. Explore the timeline as it chronicles sixteen tracks that make up the Black Gold greatest hits record and discover stories from each song. Videos, photos and memories written by the band and people who lived through every era of Editors. And, most importantly, add your own memory to the archives and let the whole world share in it. Every memory that is shared will be added to the archive. A photo of a tiny, sweaty gig in the early 2000s… A grainy video taken from your old camera phone thrust in the air while you lived out your favourite festival moment… Or maybe words. A story, a moment, a memory.

Explore the Black Gold Archive at your leisure and share in the moments that crafted Editors. And don’t forget to leave something to show the world that you were part of the journey too.
